I have an ongoing commitment to drawing which strongly informs the work that I produce as an artist. I am currently working through ideas of the landscapes that are so important to us. I have used the landscape to feel connected to the Earth and connected to those around me. As I have painted so many of the amazing places that dominate North Devon, it has been wonderful to see that people have watched and followed me on social media and enjoyed my posting the paintings each day. I challenged myself to paint en plain air every day in 2022 which was amazing to complete.

I have been long-listed for the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2021 and 2022. I was Artist in residence at the National Trust’s Bucks Mills Artist Cabin in August 2022 and the inaugural visual artist in residence for Appledore Book Festival in September 2022. I have been featured in Devon Life Magazine and on BBC Spotlight and am a regular guest on BBC Radio Devon.

I graduated in July 2020 with an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from Plymouth University where my work centred around the portrayal of women during birth and motherhood. I have been connecting with women who have been pregnant during the pandemic and unpacking their stories at this time. I am committed to ongoing learning, both for myself and others. I emerged from the MA with a more fully-formed practice that lead me into the next phase of my life as an artist.

Alongside my art practice, I run art classes both in-person and online. The online classes are run from my Facebook page: Drawing and Painting with Debs Last. Join me and explore your own journey into creativity.
